Design buildings to withstand earthquakes and hurricanes. Prevent flooding, preserve drinking water and increase the resilience of the coastal cities through innovative protection systems.Help enable self-driving cars. Transform our urban regions into “smart cities” capable of sensing and reacting to events from simple water main breaks to major disruptions. At Rutgers, students will tackle issues of global importance, including the sustainability of infrastructures and the impact of transportation on the environment.

They will work with faculty who developed a robot that examines bridge surfaces using sophisticated tools and a 3-D geospatial mapping instrument (used most recently to assess the damage from Superstorm Sandy). Students and faculty work directly with Rutgers’ Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation, one of only five national university transportation centers.
