Bachelor of Arts [B.A] Sociology
Welcome to Sociology! Sociologists explore how human interaction shapes our society, and, in turn, how social institutions influence decision-making. At UMass, Sociology is a big tent encompassing studies of the self and the intersection of personal biography with social forces, of social institutions like the family and workplaces, of collective behavior and social movements, and of world systems such as globalization. A hallmark of Sociology is that it examines theoretical arguments with empirical data.

The Social Thought and Political Economy Program (STPEC) is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The STPEC Program encourages students to engage in a critical examination of society and to develop their own capacities for critical reading, writing, and thinking. STPEC students cross disciplinary lines to confront fundamental questions often ignored or neglected by traditional academic thought.
