Master of Arts [M.A] English

  • The UBC English Graduate Program, one of the most vibrant and wide-ranging in Canada, has been awarding the MA degree.
  • University provides the flexibility to complete the MA program with or without a thesis, in one or two years. This program is offered on both a full-time or a part-time basis. 
  • The English Language program includes specializations in history and structure of language, discourse and genre analysis, and history and theory of rhetoric.
  • Faculty members in the Language program teach and supervise research in descriptive linguistics, historical linguistics, cognitive linguistics, functional grammar, semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, stylistics, genre studies, and history and theory of rhetoric.

Academic Eligibility:

Following are the academic requirements needed to attend the program:

  • Students should hold a BA degree in English or any equivalent bachelor's degree from a recognized university.
  • Students are expected to have a standing of a B+ (76%) average or better in their third- and fourth-year classes or at least 12 credits in third- and fourth-year English classes with an A- (80%) or better average.

Indian student requirements

  • A four-year bachelor's degree or a master's degree.
  • The bachelor’s degree with 65% marks or 8 on a 10-point scale.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program
