Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Chemical Engineering

  • Ph.D. candidates in chemical engineering are required to complete a research dissertation of significant depth and creativity.
  • Students are also asked to complete a program of course work in order to both deepen their technical expertise in chemical engineering plus acquire the knowledge outside of chemical engineering necessary for successful completion of their dissertation research.
  • Chemical engineering electives and core courses also broaden the student's technical expertise in chemical engineering.
  • Each course taken is required to be part of the student's plan of study approved by the research advisor, department chair and dean of the Graduate School.
  • Each doctoral student is required to complete 30 credit hours of 6000, 7000 or 8000 level letter graded (A, B, C) course work plus an additional thirty (30) credit hours of the sum of the following: 6000, 7000 or 8000 level courses, S-U graded courses (e.g. seminar, research orientation, directed reading, independent study), research and dissertation credit hours.( Obtainng a B or better in these core courses serves as the PhD qualifying exam. )

  • A bachelor`s degree or higher with minimum GPA 3.0, or equivalent
  • GRE scores are required.
  • International applicants must score at least

    • TOEFL:
      • 550 on the paper version (pBT),
      • 213 on the computer version (cBT), and
      • 79 on the internet version (iBT), minimums of 16 on the listening, reading, speaking, and writing components.
    • IELTS: 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam.
