- The Department of English, General Literature and Rhetoric offers students the opportunity to study literature and language in a deep and complex manner. Concentrations are available in global culture, creative writing, and rhetoric.
- Literature courses deal broadly with genres and themes from the past and present, and teach students how to read and analyze texts; creative writing courses foster the development of serious creativity; rhetoric courses deal with both the theory and practice of communication, as well as the history of oral and written argument.

Academic Eligibility:
- Official transcripts are required for each of the most recent three (3) years of schooling completed.
- Proof of English proficiency may be required for international applicants, whose first language is not English.
- Students must be qualified in IELTS or TOEFL to get admission in this program.
Indian Student Eligibility:
- The student has graduated from senior secondary school or equivalent from the recognized institution.
- Non-native English speakers must submit one test score demonstrating English Proficiency. All test scores must be less than 2 years old.
- Binghamton accepts the following tests for demonstrating English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, SAT and ACT.
