Doctor of Medicine [M.D]/Doctor of Philosophy [Ph.D] Biochemistry

  • McMaster University offers a Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Philosophy for a duration of 4 years.
  • This program is an on-campus and thesis-based program.
  • The MD/PhD program will be offered in an integrated format with specific blocks of time provided for activities either in full- or part-time studies in either program. 
  • Students must successfully complete the equivalent of three 700-level graduate half courses.
  • The MD program must be completed during graduate research block (3 years).
  • Attendance at MD/PhD program group meetings (faculty and students) will be held a minimum of 3 times annually.
  • In addition, students must complete the PhD program requirements as outlined in the relevant section of the Graduate Calendar, including the PhD Candidacy Examination and the submission and defence of a research thesis.
  • The department holds a one-day departmental workshop on research ethics, data presentation and scientific integrity.
  • This is held in December and is mandatory for all first year graduate students.

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students have to complete 4 year Honours BSc or BHSc degree from a recognized university.
  • Students should complete these degree in biochemistry, chemistry, molecular biology, medicine, microbiology or physics.
  • Students hold a minimum academic standing of 10.5/12 (on the McMaster scale) or 3.5 on a 4 point scale in the final two years of the Bachelor’s degree study in courses relevant to the program. 
  • MD students must apply through OMSAS for Medical admissions, achieve a high score in the autobiographical submission, and complete the MMI exercise in April. 

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed a 4-year UG degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Or, completed a 3-year UG degree from an accredited institution.

Submission of GRE scores is not compulsory for this program, however, if students have given the GRE exam then it is recommended to submit the scores (minimum 300) for a better chance of admission.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.
