Master of Law [L.L.M]

  • The Master of Laws (L.L.M) at the University of California is a 2 years program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis.
  • Master of Laws is a general degree designed to prepare foreign lawyers for global practice.
  • Students can earn certificates of specialization in several areas of law, pursue eligibility to register for a U.S. bar exam or complete a thesis.
  • The school is a member of the Association of American Law Schools and is accredited by the American Bar Association.
  • LLM program is consists of three options:
    • Executive Track (Flexible online/on-campus study)
    • Traditional Track (9-month on-campus academic year)
    • Thesis Track (9-month on-campus academic year + research)
  • The traditional track of the program takes place during the standard academic year from August to May.  
  • Each student in the traditional track completes mandatory courses in Fundamentals of U.S. Law and Legal Research and Writing and then may customize their studies by choosing from the full range of law school offerings.
  • Students take approximately 3-4 courses each semester.
  • Students may focus their studies to earn Certificates of Specialization and/or to meet the requirements to become eligible to register for a Bar Exam many LL.M. students pursue eligibility to sit for the California or New York Bar Examination.

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must complete a J.D., LL.B., or Bachelor of Laws degree from an accredited institution.
  • Students hold a satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale.
  • Students have enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in their chosen field.
  • The submission of LSAT scores is compulsory for this program.

English Language proficiency:

  • All students from countries or political entities in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency.
  • This applies to students from Bangladesh, Burma, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Latin America, the Middle East, the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, most European countries, and Quebec (Canada).

Indian Eligibility:

Students must complete one condition to get eligible for the program:

  • Students must complete 3 years Bachelor’s + Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized university.
  • Or, students complete an integrated 5 years Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized institution.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
