The French major offers two areas of study:
- French language and literatures
- French language and linguistics
As the student progresses within the major, the specialization of either literature or linguistics will begin through strategic elective course selections. Students will typically also choose to double major within a different discipline to build a holistic degree plan.

Academic Eligibility:
- Official transcripts are required for each of the most recent three (3) years of schooling completed.
- Proof of English proficiency may be required for international applicants, whose first language is not English.
- Students must be qualified in IELTS or TOEFL to get admission in this program.
Indian Student Eligibility:
- The student has graduated from senior secondary school or equivalent from the recognized institution.
- Non-native English speakers must submit one test score demonstrating English Proficiency. All test scores must be less than 2 years old.
- Binghamton accepts the following tests for demonstrating English proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, SAT and ACT.
