Master of Computer Science [M.C.S]

  • Carleton University offers a Master of Computer Science for a duration of 2 years.
  • This program is offered on a full-time basis and consists of 3 options: research project, thesis, and co-op option.
  • It is a joint program between the School of Computer Science at Carleton University and the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Ottawa.
  • Students get an opportunity to augment their knowledge and expertise by combining course work and through research in a wide range of areas, e.g. algorithms, computer security, etc.
  • The major components of the Computer Science program are:

    • Information Systems Security and Applied Cryptography
  • Students in the MCS program can select from over 50 courses that are offered by the OCICS either at the School of Computer Science or at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
  • In the thesis and course-based, students must take 5 courses or equivalent in thesis and 8 courses in the course-based and a project in the last semester.
  • Co-op students complete 2 work terms of 4 months and the first work term is taken after 2 terms of course work.
  • Students admitted to the co-op option can apply at a local high tech company for work up to 8 months.
  • The University provides a 1-year in-depth research project in research labs, e.g., National Research Council, Communication Research Centre, in the specialized course program.
  • The MCS at Carleton University is a government-designated STEM degree, so international students may be eligible for the 24-month F1 OPT (optional practical training) extension.

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must have a 4-year bachelor’s degree in a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Students who may have a UG degree in any engineering field are also eligible to apply.
  • GPA of at least 3.0/4.33 (B grade) which is the equivalent of 8.0/12 on Carleton’s scale is required to be eligible for the program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Completed of both a Bachelor’s (3 years) degree and a Master’s degree.
  • Or, completed a Bachelor’s degree requiring 4 years of study (e.g., B.Pharm., M.B.B.S, or B.Arch).
  • Or, obtain a first-class division (75% or above, Distinction or Outstanding).
  • Or, complete 3-year UG from an institution accredited by either AACSB, EQUIS or AMBA.

Submission of GMAT scores is compulsory for this program, however, students may submit a GRE score too in lieu of that.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.
