The Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards, sponsored by ACIP, supports African students (regardless of citizenship) enrolled in Ph.D. programs in the humanities and humanistic social sciences in South Africa and working on dissertations. The value of the grant varies depending on the research intentions, with a maximum of $50,000. A maximum prize of ZAR 40,000 is available. Doctoral projects in specific areas are supported by awards. Awards support doctoral projects focused on topics such as institutions of public culture, museums, and exhibitions, forms and practices of public scholarship, culture and communication, and theories, histories, and systems of thought that shape and illuminate public culture and public scholarship.

Application Steps

The Ivan Karp Doctoral Research Awards are open to African postgraduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences (independent of citizenship). Applicants must be enrolled in a South African university's Ph.D. program and researching on themes pertinent to ACIP's focus. Doctoral research projects will be supported on topics such as public culture institutions, specific aspects of museums and exhibitions, public scholarship forms and practices, culture and communication, and the theories, histories, and systems of thought that shape and illuminate public culture and public scholarship. To confirm the award, applicants must submit a dissertation proposal that has been authorized by their university; this must be completed before beginning ACIP-funded on-site research or by December 2022, whichever comes first.
